Eurypterids, also known as 'sea scorpions,' are giant, eight-foot-long scorpions. They are described as brown creatures with large pincers and the tail of a scorpion. When pet, Eurypterids let out a hiss that sounds like a cat's purr.

In Atlantis, elves use eurypterids pulling silver carriages as a taxicab system.

Involvement[]

Book 1: Keeper of the Lost Cities[]

Much to Fitz's amusement, Eurypterids terrified Sophie when she first had to ride one with Alden to visit Quinlin Sonden. Lady Gisela combined Eurypterid DNA with a myriad of other creatures to create the Gorgodon hybrid to guard Nightfall; Lady Gisela used the Eurypterid DNA to give the Gorgodons stinging tails. Elwin owns a tunic patterned with eurypterids.

Book 2: Exile[]

In Exile, Keefe mentions going to see Eurypterid Races in Atlantis, in which the eurypterids allegedly sometimes get loose and "claw their way into the stands."[1]

Quotes[]

“Fitz leaned down and stroked the shiny brown shell along the eurypterid's back. Sophie waited for the pincers to slice him in half, but the creature held still, emitting a low hissing sound, like it enjoyed being petted.”
