But their enemies are far from done and unleash a terrifying plague that threatens the safety of an entire species. Sophie and her friends fight with everything they have—with new allies joining them—but every choice has consequences. And trusting the wrong person could prove deadly.

In this game-changing fourth book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, Sophie must question everything to find a truth that will either save her world—or shatter it.[1]

Plot[]

Leaving everything they know behind, Sophie and her friends; Fitz, Keefe, Biana and Dex go to live with the mysterious Black Swan. Upon their arrival, it is revealed that Della has stowed away and will be joining them at the Black Swan. The group is introduced to where they will be living during their stay, Alluveterre, and are taken to the Black Swan's Collective where Sophie receives her memory of the Boy Who Disappeared (when she was five, she saw a mysterious boy who light leaped away. She got scared and ran home, only to hit her head and be taken to the hospital), with the help of Fitz because they are made Cognates - Telepaths with a special connection. After the memory is discovered to be useless (however, she discovers that the boy had indeed been an elf), Sophie returns to her tree house and meets Calla, a gnome who helped with and named Project Moonlark.

For the next day or two, Keefe is furious and in grief, not making an appearance for any of their meals. Sophie cheers him up one night later by having a "window sleepover" with him.

Mr. Forkle takes Sophie and Keefe to visit Gethen, a member of the Neverseen who they have captive. Mr. Forkle extracts some information from him while Gethen taunts Keefe and the three return. Keefe, now extremely frustrated, begs for fathomlethes. His wish is granted, and he leaves to the tree house to search for answers about his mother.

Meanwhile, Dex makes a device and finds a scroll and discovers a secret about drakostomes that may imply the Council knew about the plague.

The five, along with Della and the Collective, go to Exile to get Prentice back, during which they are found by the Council. Fitz is attacked by an arthropleura and is mortally wounded. The Black Swan and Council negotiate, and upon realizing that the Black Swan has Gethen, they make a trade to let Prentice go if they get the Neverseen member. They are also sentenced to Exillium. Fitz continues to slowly heal, and Sophie finds out that Mr. Forkle is her Level Two Universe Mentor, Sir Astin. Keefe finds Fitz's red stuffed animal dragon, Mr. Snuggles (named by Elwin) and starts to freak. Sophie helps Keefe with the memories, as he has gotten a bit depressed. Calla leaves Alluveterre. Sophie walks in on Tiergan, Magnate Leto, and Wylie trying to work with Prentice. Fitz finally heals.

The five get ready to go to Exillium when Sophie figures out she is actually fourteen by Elvin standards because elves count their age from inception instead of birth. In Exillium, they undergo rigorous and hard training (Sophie starts a fire during the initiation) and meet twins their age- Linh and Tam Song. They learn things such as levitating and breathing underwater and other skills rather than using their Talents. Sophie gets a message from Silveny saying that she's pregnant.

Mr. Forkle meets with Linh (a Hydrokinetic) and Tam (a Shade). Keefe and Tam are shown to not get along. Mr. Forkle and Tam discover that the plague feeds off of shadowvapor.

Sophie hails Oralie to give her the update on Silveny. She also tells her about the deplorable Exillium conditions, which Oralie promises to fix. The next morning, Exillium has vastly improved.

Sophie and Fitz continue to train as Cognates with Mr. Forkle, this time doing emotional exercises with the help of Keefe. They manage to make it past Mr. Forkle's blocking and figure out that Mr. Forkle has been planning to ask Lord Cassius to join the Black Swan, making Keefe incredibly upset. Calla finds out that the Council already knew about the plague and never warned the gnomes, thus making her devastated.

The five disguise themselves and return to the Lost Cities, where they find out that Fintan had actually survived the Everblaze that wiped out Eternalia. The ogres admitted that they were behind the disease, and that the only cure was a type of tree, Panakes. The creatures say that they will give gnomes the cure if they become slaves in Ravagog. Sophie, Tam, Linh, and the others work with Alvar to go to Ravagog and find the tree bark. With Keefe as a distraction, Sophie reads King Dimitar's mind and finds out the cure is fake. This ends with Linh flooding the city and them finding out Alvar was the boy who disappeared and one of Sophie's kidnappers. When they return, Calla sacrifices herself by turning into a Panakes tree (gnomes turn into trees at death) in Havenfield and the gnomes are cured.

After that, Sophie decides to tell the Council that it's time to let the alicorns go free with Keefe. They settle the arrangement and Keefe leaps to meet the Neverseen, not realizing Sophie grabbed him at the last second thinking that he genuinely wanted to join. Keefe mimics Sophie's voice to be in posession of Kenric's cache to prove his commitment. The Neverseen try to grab Sophie, but Keefe lets her escape using a necklace he gave her. She returns and tells Mr. Forkle and Granite the news. Everyone is gobsmacked and Grady is especially angry, calling Keefe "That Boy" instead of his real name. Mr. Forkle and Granite then reveal themselves to be Magnate Leto and Tiergan respectively. The story ends with Magnate Leto saying, "As of this morning, Prentice is awake."
